Viking Woods is the residence campus of Jefferson College, and this project involves expanding the residential facilities and designing a new police station to replace the current one, which is situated in a two-bedroom apartment. The final design includes six 409-square-foot studio apartments, four two-bedroom apartments (two at 889 square feet and two at 955 square feet), and a 1,895-square-foot police station.

The site and design prompt presented several unique challenges. The project site features drastically changing topography, which we addressed by utilizing a retaining wall along the front drive. Instead of installing a large and costly retaining wall along the eastern portion of the building, we designed a walkout basement, creating needed storage space and adding value for the client.
Differentiating the public police station from the private residential units while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic was another challenge. We achieved this by integrating traditional residential architectural elements such as gabled roofs, paneled siding with cool-toned colors, and storefront windows to clearly distinguish the different programs. We also incorporated Jefferson College blue throughout the building to enhance design consistency.
